IS 335 - Plagues (3)

This course is a survey of plagues in world history using the disciplines of biology and history as interpretative guides. The biological origins, historical and modern techniques of disease control, the social consequences of plagues, and the historical and contemporary ethical debates concerning the nature of disease and treatment of plague victims provide the foundation of the course. In addition, the transnational causes and effects of plagues, such as the Black Death (bubonic plague), small pox, cholera, and AIDS, will be explored in depth.
