Environmental Science Minor

Students of all majors are welcomed to complete an environmental science minor with the Biology Department. The environmental science minor encourages a global perspective on a wide range of contemporary challenges in resource management and prepares students to contribute positively to a more sustainable future within the context of their major discipline or career.
Environmental Science Minors must complete a total of 19 hours in the minor area to include:

12 credit hours from the following
6 hours must be 300 level or above, and no more than 6 hours may be taken outside the biology department.
Outcomes
Outcome 1.
Acquire a foundation of knowledge that includes the ecological basis of resource management as well as social, economic, historical, and political factors that influence patterns of resource use.
Outcome 2.
Articulate ethical dimensions of conservation and resource use, including an understanding of the implications of different world views when identifying and implementing strategies for sustainable development.
Outcome 3.
Develop skills and sensitivities that allow productive dialogue across competing interests and disciplinary boundaries relevant to the resolution of local, regional, and global environmental challenges.
Assessment
The outcomes for the environmental science major are assessed throughout the curriculum through a combination of course written examinations, graded laboratory activities, assigned papers and essays, and in-class activities and discussions.
Minor Note
- At least 18 semester hours in a subject area are required for a minor.
- A minimum of 9 hours in the minor must be earned at Avila University.
- A minimum of 9 hours must be unique between a major and a minor.
- A grade of “C” or better must be earned for all graded courses required for the minor.
