Chemistry Minor

Chemistry Minors must complete 22 hours in the minor area to include:

Outcomes


Upon finishing the Chemistry minor, students will have met the following outcomes:

Outcome 1.

Ability to provide an explanation of the importance of the scientific method for understanding natural phenomena.

Outcome 2.

Demonstrate a working knowledge of the basic principles of general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry, analytical chemistry, or physical chemistry.

Outcome 3.

Demonstrate quantitative skills used in chemistry, including the ability to read graphs and carry out calculations.

Outcome 4.

Ability to understand and use information from scientific papers to effectively communicate scientific data and ideas in both written and oral formats.

Assessment


The outcomes for the chemistry minor are assessed throughout the curriculum through a combination of written course examinations, written papers, laboratory reports, and oral presentations.

Minor Note


  • At least 18 semester hours in a subject area are required for a minor.
  • A minimum of 9 hours in the minor must be earned at Avila University.
    • At least six of these hours must be numbered 300 or above. (Note: If the minor is in Biology or Chemistry, only four (4) of the 9 semester hours in the minor at Avila must be in courses numbered 300 or above.)

  • A minimum of 9 hours must be unique between a major and a minor. 
  • A grade of “C” or better must be earned for all graded courses required for the minor.
