ED 551 - Study of the English Language (3)This course examines the origins of the English language, from its roots in the distant past, through what is known as Old English, Middle English, and Modern English. We will examine the morphology, syntax, grammar, semantics, phonology, and vocabulary of English and how these have evolved. In addition, we will look at American dialects and how social and cultural forces affect language. Finally, we will observe how language and literacy develop in children and how to address individual differences in language development among learners to enhance their verbal and written expression.
