EDTS 507 - The Growth Mindset: Fostering Resilience & a Love of Learning (3)Do you ever feel like no matter what you do, it’s never enough? Maybe a student can’t seem to grasp a concept no matter how you present it. Or maybe you’re drowning in an endless stream of responsibilities and wondering if something’s wrong with you.
Thoughts like these indicate what Carol Dweck calls a fixed mindset, or the belief that people have a certain amount of ability and can’t do anything to overcome it. In contrast, a growth mindset is the belief that with enough hard work, practice, and dedication, your skills can grow.
Whether you realize it or not, your mindset affects not only you, but your students as well. In this course, you will examine your internalized beliefs about your mindset toward learning, and develop a classroom structure that creates a culture of perseverance. You’ll learn how to reframe students’ academic struggles as opportunities for development rather than indications that they’re just not “good” at a particular subject.
All students deserve to feel that they have an equal chance to master new skills. With the growth mindset you develop in this course, you will be able to help your students cultivate the attitude and determination they need to succeed in your classroom and beyond.
