EDAR 503 - Bullying Today

Bullying is systemic in our schools, and few, if any, are immune to its harmful effects. It can take on a multitude of forms: gossiping, teasing, verbal and physical intimidation, excluding, and physical violence. The devastating impact of bullying runs the gamut from mild psychological trauma to suicide and even homicide. Unfortunately, the introduction of the Internet and social media has only intensified these hostile and destructive behaviors. Teachers often struggle to know how to intervene, but as a teacher, you play a vital role in helping students understand why they bully, how bullying impacts everyone involved, and the importance of treating one another with kindness and respect.

In this course, you will develop effective and realistic strategies to address bullying and build a respectful, inclusive classroom. You’ll examine the culture of bullying and cyberbullying to understand why students behave this way and how to intervene. In addition, you’ll be able to develop a culture in which students treat one another kindly, feel confident to speak up about bullying when it occurs, and are empowered to spread an antibullying message to others.

Using the techniques from this course, you’ll be able to confidently address incidents of bullying at your school and move your students toward a culture of confidence and kindness.
