The purpose of the Global Studies & Social Justice minor is to provide students with broad contexts for thinking through difference and diversity, facing challenging engagements with multicultural and intercultural dynamics of power, and also increasing personal awareness of how our own selves emerge and are shaped by global forces and processes. The goals of this minor are to increasingly globalize student perspectives, engage with others across many types of boundaries, as well as learn to be advocates for a more socially just society.

Program Requirements

Global Studies & Social Justice minors must complete a total of 18 hours in the minor. No more than six hours taken from the same discipline will count toward the minor to include:

Outcomes

Global Studies & Social Justice minors will be expected to meet the following program outcomes as a result of their cumulative coursework:

  • Articulate a globalized perspective
  • Communicate using existing resources and evolving technologies to facilitate collaboration within and between our global communities
  • Demonstrate ways of advocating for a socially-just global society

Assessment

The interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary nature of the Global Studies & Social Justice minor necessitates variation with regard to methods of assessment of the above outcomes. Assessing the minor as a whole, students will complete an online survey inquiry form - developed by the Affiliate Faculty of the Center for Global Studies & Social Justice - at the beginning and end of their minor studies.

Within GS courses themselves, students will be assessed largely through practices of writing, speaking, and group dynamics. These could take the form of one or more of the following: examinations, essays, reports, online contributions, oral presentations in a physical or electronic form, formal interactions within and beyond class participants, course-based discussions, community-based projects, collaborative-creative work, and international academic travel experiences.

Minor Note

  • At least 18 semester hours in a subject area are required for a minor.
