The 120 credit hour Bachelor of Music students study music from a broad historical, performative, and theoretical perspective.

Music majors wanting to become certified K-12 music teachers will double major in Music and Education, B.S. The Education major cannot be taken alone, students must major in Music. Avila University’s School of Education offers teacher certification in vocal music and instrumental music.

Required Core Courses


Bachelor of Music majors must take the following course to meet the Liberal Arts core requirement regardless of whether the core is otherwise met:

Bachelor of Music majors must choose one of the following concentrations to complete their degree.

Technology Requirement


Computer competency will be demonstrated by successful completion of MU 271 , MU 272 , MU 273 , and MU 274  within the major.

Outcomes


Outcome 1.

Demonstrate knowledge of harmony, melody and rhythm through analysis.

Outcome 2.

Place music in proper historical and social context; define and apply appropriate vocabulary and terminology to music.

Assessment


Outcome 1:

Courses MU 272  and MU 274 : 100% of students will analyze a Bach chorale during Music Theory II and compose a final project of 24-36 measures. At least 80% of students will demonstrate proficiency of basic analytical techniques through Roman numeral analysis, form analysis (including phrase structure and larger form documentation) and the incorporation of relevant non-chord tones. The juxtaposition of both written analysis and composition will document the competencies of analysis.

Outcome 2:

Course MU 498 : 100% of students will perform a Senior Recital of music literature with a minimum of 50% of the music performed in partnership with another performer; a minimum of 25% must be solo literature. 100% of students will write program notes placing the music in proper historical and social context. 90% of students will demonstrate proficiency through the live performance of solo and collaborative literature.
