MBA Program Policies
Admission Requirements
The admission requirements for the MBA program can be found on the Admissions page. MBA students must also meet the following:
- Have a grade point average of 2.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale for all undergraduate or graduate level coursework. Students with a GPA less than 2.75 or at least 2.50 will be admitted provisionally. Students admitted provisionally to the MBA program must achieve a 3.0 GPA on the first nine credits in their program of study.
- The admissions committee will consider all applications to evaluate any additional prerequisite courses needed.
- Submit official transcript/s of the bachelor’s degree as well as any graduate level coursework.
Degree Requirements
The MBA degree requires a minimum of 30 credit hours of graduate coursework that students must complete within seven years, maintaining a grade point average of 3.0 in order to graduate.
Student Status within the Graduate Program
Student in Good Standing
- Has successfully met all entrance requirements.
- Has maintained an overall GPA of 3.0 or better with no grade below “C” (only two courses with “C” grades are allowed; students may retake a class with a grade below a “C” once).
Probationary Status
- If the student is missing the statistics course requirement, the student must take a stats course within the first two semesters in the program.
- A student may change status from “Student in Good Standing” to “Student on Probation” if any of the following criteria are met: overall GPA falls below 3.0 or student receives a grade of “C” or lower in any course.
- Students on probation due to GPA have six credit hours to return their GPA to 3.0 or above to regain “Good Standing”. Failure to raise the GPA may lead to dismissal from the program.
4+1 Early Admission
You are eligible to apply if you are an Avila Undergraduate and have completed 55 or more credit hours. Prospective students must complete the following courses with a B- or better in at least five (5) of the following business core areas at Avila: (Note: If you are transferring in these courses, you may satisfy this requirement with additional coursework in content area)
AC 201 Principles of Accounting I or AC 202 - Principles of Accounting II
EC 202 Principles of Microeconomics or EC 203 - Principles of Macroeconomics
EC 240 Statistical Analysis
FI 330 Finance
MG 321 Management or MG 322 Organizational Behavior
MK 310 Marketing
If the requirements above are met you will be admitted to the MBA program upon application if you have an undergraduate GPA at the time of application of 3.2 or higher. If the above requirements are not met, other criteria, such as business coursework grade point average, GMAT (if taken) and recommendation letters can be submitted to the School of Business admission committee by prospective students. If admitted, graduate coursework can begin once you have completed 75 or more credit hours. A denial decision to the early admission MBA program does not preclude future admission into the MBA program after the bachelor’s degree has been completed.
- Minimum number of graduate credit hours for an MBA = 30
- Maximum number of MBA credit hours allowed prior to completion of the BSBA degree = 12
Once admitted to the early admission MBA program, a 3.0 GPA in all graduate and undergraduate coursework must be maintained, with no grades below a “B” in graduate courses. Failure to meet these minimum requirements will result in removal from the early admission option.
Grades
The MBA student can only repeat a given course one time. Only two “C” grades are allowed during the student’s entire program of study.
Requirements for Graduation
Each program must involve a minimum of 30 total graduate credit hours of which 24 credit hours are open exclusively to graduate students. A maximum of six graduate credit hours may be transferred from another accredited institution toward the minimum 30 credit hour requirement.
All concentrations require the completion of nine credit hours of work in an area of concentration. All students must file an application for degree in accordance with guidelines set forth by the University. A 3.0 grade point average is required in graduate courses. All requirements for the degree program must be completed within a seven-year period.
Incomplete Grade in Directed Study or Research
Any incomplete (“I”) grade in a graduate Directed Study or Research course not completed for evaluation by the first day of the second session or semester following the one in which the student initially enrolled will be changed to “F.”
In order to extend the time for completing the work, the student must again enroll in the course and pay the tuition.
The Curriculum
The specific courses required of a particular student in completing the program depends on his or her prior educational background and the specific concentration selected. Courses may be classified as prerequisite and core courses. Internships are not required in the MBA program; however, students may opt to enroll in an internship for elective credit only.
Math Prerequisite Course
All MBA concentrations require MA 120 College Algebra or equivalent.
