Healthcare Management, B.S.

The candidate for the Bachelor of Science degree in Healthcare Management offered through the Avila Advantage program must complete all the University general degree requirements.

Admission to the Major

The Advantage Healthcare Management major is open only to students who meet the requirements for admission to the Avila Advantage program.

The major welcomes students seeking their first bachelor’s degree as well as students who may already have a bachelor’s or an associate degree. The major is particularly suitable for those candidates who may already have a background through education and/or work experience in health-related fields, such as (but not limited to) counseling, medical technology, medical transcription, nursing, nursing assistant, nutrition, occupational therapy, physical therapy, or radiologic science.

Core Requirements

All students must complete the Avila University Core Curriculum as a part of their degree programs. The Core consists of a minimum of 39 credit hours that meet the requirements listed below. Please go to Core Curriculum  for more information and to view all Core classes.

Core Foundations (9-11 credit hours)

Foundations requirements provide the basic skills essential for effective participation in other classes as well as the professional world.

Core Pillars & Levels (30 credit hours)

Pillars and Levels requirements address the breadth of knowledge expected of a liberal arts education and challenges students to integrate prior knowledge and create new ideas through higher levels of coursework.

Cross-Application Note: All courses that meet a Pillar also meet a Level and may meet a Designation requirement. Some courses taken for major and/or minor requirements may also meet Core requirements.

Requirement 1.

Fulfill all the requirements for a degree as stated in this catalog.

Requirement 2.

Students must achieve a minimum grade of “C” in all courses required for the major.

Graduates for the Bachelor of Science degree in Healthcare Management will be able to:

Professional Studies Outcomes

Outcome 1.

Develop and analyze innovative solutions for problems using critical and creative reasoning (BU 321, BU 322, EC 202 or EC 203, EC 240).

Outcome 2.

Demonstrate the ability to clearly communicate in professional settings using effective interpersonal, teamwork, cultural, presentational, and writing skills (CO 212, CO 213, CO 312, CO 321).  

Outcome 3.

Demonstrate an understanding of ethical frameworks and theories and how to apply them in professional situations (BU 305, CO 212, CO 321).

Outcome 4.

Demonstrate the ability to use technology in managing organizations (CO 213, EC 240, HC 456).

Healthcare Management Outcomes

Outcome 1.

Build a team model that uses (1) inter-professional collaboration at the organizational and departmental levels, and (2) communication/relationship processes (influencing behaviors, diversity, community involvement, engendering trust, and demonstration of integrity) (HC 310 , HC 330 , HC 499 ).

Outcome 2.

Explain key leadership initiatives in healthcare based on identification, interpretation, and application of health outcomes (HC 320 , HC 330 , HC 335 , HC 499 ). 

Outcome 3.

Integrate critical reasoning and evidence-based decision making to effectively lead in a managed care facility (HC 320 , HC 499 ).

Outcome 4.

Employ current healthcare services components, laws, and policies to create a plan that impacts local, regional, national, and global communities (HC 305 , HC 340 , HC 499 ).

Outcome 5.

Perform analysis of past trends and current structures, functions, and policies of the four basic healthcare services

(HC 499 , HC 320 , HC 340 , HC 305 ).

Outcome 6.

Evaluate healthcare services, marketing, and revenue trends from organizational, community, and national perspectives (HC 499 , HC 320 , HC 330 , HC 335 ).

Assessment

Summative outcomes for the Healthcare Management degree in the Avila Advantage program are assessed through a written healthcare plan and an oral presentation of that plan to outside professionals in the capstone course (HC 499 ). In addition to the six Healthcare Management outcomes, the four Professional Studies outcomes are assessed through the healthcare plan as well. The Summative assessment occurs yearly.  Formative outcomes are assessed in individual courses as students move through the program. Each year data is gathered for two of the six outcomes. After three years, faculty review both formative and summative data results for all Healthcare Management outcomes at once.
