Mathematics Minor


Mathematics is an art, a science, and a language. It encompasses the beauty of pattern and structure, the challenge of uncertainty and abstraction, and the excitement of solving problems. Mathematics provides a foundation for much of modern human society.

A Middle School Education: Mathematics Concentration, B.S.  is offered.

Program Requirements


Mathematics Minors must complete a total of 18 hours in the minor area to include:

Outcomes


Mathematics minors will be expected to meet the following program outcomes.

Outcome 1.

The student will acquire appropriate foundational mathematical skills (MA 241 ).

Outcome 2.

The student will be able to communicate mathematical ideas orally and in writing (All MA courses 200 level or above, with the exception of crosslisted courses).

Outcome 3.

The student will demonstrate an understanding of the various areas of mathematics and the connections between them (All MA courses 200 level or above, with the exception of crosslisted courses).

Outcome 4.

The student will be able to understand, construct, and present proofs of mathematical theorems (MA 230  and all MA courses 300 level or above, with the exception of crosslisted courses).

Assessment


The outcomes for the Mathematics minor are assessed through a combination of course examinations and quizzes, written and performance assignments, individual and group projects, and board presentations.

Minor Note


  • At least 18 semester hours in a subject area are required for a minor.
  • A minimum of 9 hours in the minor must be earned at Avila University.
    • At least six of these hours must be numbered 300 or above. (Note: If the minor is in Biology or Chemistry, only four (4) of the 9 semester hours in the minor at Avila must be in courses numbered 300 or above.)

  • A minimum of 9 hours must be unique between a major and a minor. 
  • A grade of “C” or better must be earned for all graded courses required for the minor.
