Secondary Education Minor

Secondary education minors must major in the discipline (content area) they plan to teach and minor in secondary education. These candidates must see both a major advisor and a School of Education advisor each semester. The School of Education advisor will apprise the student of information regarding School of Education policy, state required certification exams, and other procedures mandated within the School of Education. Certificates to teach at the secondary level (grades 9-12) are offered in Art (K-12), Biology, English, Social Studies, and Speech/Theater. For candidates planning to teach high school business, a major in Business Education is offered. (See Business Education, B.A. ).

Program Requirements
Candidates who are preparing to teach at the secondary level (grades 9-12) must complete Avila University’s general degree requirements, the major requirements (see appropriate major for these requirements), education requirements, and minor / certification requirements in order to receive initital teacher certification. State certification requirements are usually met by completing the major, but in some cases an additional courses may be required. See your Education academic advisor for the state certification requirements.

Teacher Candidates who are minoring in secondary education, must also complete the following minor related requirements in order to receive initial teacher certification:
Education Note:
The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is completing a re-design of teacher education programs. As a result, requirements are subject to change.
Minor Note
- At least 18 semester hours in a subject area are required for a minor.
- A minimum of 9 hours in the minor must be earned at Avila University
- A minimum of 9 hours must be unique between a major and a minor.
- A grade of “C” or better must be earned for all graded courses required for the minor.
