Theatre: Directing/Producing Concentration, B.F.A

Theatre (TR)


Degrees offered:
Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Major: Theatre . Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) Major: Theatre with choice of concentrations in Acting , Directing/Producing , Theatre Design and Technology , or Musical Theatre .

Major Requirements:


The candidate for the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre must complete all the general degree requirements as stated in the Core Curriculum. In addition, the B.F.A. candidate must complete the following:

Requirement 1.

Completion of at least 24 upper-division hours in the major at Avila.

Requirement 2.

A maximum of 75 hours in any single subject is allowed.

Requirement 3.

Theatre majors and minors must receive a grade of “C” or higher in all courses taken in the major.

Computer competency will be demonstrated by successful completion of TR 223  and TR 253 .

Theatre Education:


Students wishing to become high school speech/theatre teachers may do so at Avila University. A program approved by the State of Missouri is offered. Kansas certification requirements may be completed concurrently. Students who wish to become high school speech/theatre teachers must see both a theatre advisor and an education advisor to ensure that all requirements are met. Outcomes


In addition to the degree requirements stated earlier in this catalog, upon graduation an Avila University Theatre major will have demonstrated ability to:

Outcome 1.

Read and analyze a theatrical text. Assessed in all acting courses (TR 271 , TR 361 , TR 471 , TR 473 , TR 477 ); all design courses (TR 377 , TR 451 , TR 452 , TR 453 , TR 454 , TR 456 ); all directing courses (TR 281 , TR 463 ); all dramatic literature and theatre history, and dramatic theory and criticism courses (TR 223 , TR 454 , TR 415 , TR 425 ); and in the capstone for the major (TR 499 ).

Outcome 2.

Place text and production in an historical context. Assessed in all dramatic literature, theatre history, and theory and criticism courses (TR 223 , TR 324 , TR 415 , TR 425 , TR 455 ); design course (TR 452 ); and in the capstone for the major (TR 499 ).

Outcome 3.

Identify significant dramatic theorists/critics and playwrights and their pertinent major works. Assessed in all dramatic literature, theatre history, and theory and criticism (TR 223 , TR 324 , TR 415 , TR 425 , TR 455 ); and in the capstone for the major (TR 499 ).

Outcome 4.

Display a basic knowledge of elemental techniques in lighting, scenery, and costume. Assessed in stagecraft (TR 251 ) stage lighting (TR 253 ) and costume (TR 255 ) classes; and in the capstone for the major (TR 499 ).

Outcome 5.

Display a basic knowledge of acting technique and character development. Assessed in all acting courses (TR 271 , TR 361 , TR 471 , TR 477 ); all directing courses (TR 281 , TR 463 ); movement classes (TR 115 , TR 225 ) and in the capstone for the major (TR 499 ).

Assessment


The outcomes for the Theatre major are assessed through a combination of written and performance projects. The assessment process culminates in the senior capstone. Each major must complete TR 499 - Senior Project (3) , the capstone in the major, which is 1) performance-based with a written component and, 2) is supervised and evaluated by a faculty mentor.

Note


Grades of CR/NC are not permitted with the Theatre major requirements.
