Through the Bachelor Arts in Music, students study music from a broad historical, performative, and theoretical perspective.

Music (MU)


Degrees offered:
Bachelor of Arts in Music   

Bachelor of Music. (B.M.) Major: Music with a choice of concentration - Conducting , Collaborative Piano , or Voice Performance .

The candidate for the Bachelor of Arts in Music and the Bachelor of Music must complete all the general degree requirements as stated in the Core Curriculum .

A concentration in Conducting includes the preparatory coursework that may count toward K-12 certification in Music.  Although Avila University is not approved to offer certification in music, students may seek graduate work and K-12 certification in Music at universities approved by the State of Missouri or by other states. 

Technology Requirements


Computer competency will be demonstrated by successful completion of MU 271 - Music Theory I (3) , MU 273 - Music Theory I Lab (1) , MU 272 - Music Theory II (3)  and MU 274 - Music Theory II Lab (1) .

Outcomes


Outcome 1.

Place music in proper historical and social context.

Outcome 2.

Define and apply appropriate vocabulary and terminology to music.

Outcome 3.

Demonstrate knowledge of harmony, melody, and rhythm through analysis.

Outcome 4.

Describe the significant characteristics and movements of music.

Outcome 5.

Illustrate the comprehensive knowledge of music through performance.

Assessment


The outcomes of the Music Major are assessed through the following courses:

  • MU 384: Students will demonstrate knowledge of the historical and social context of music through essays and exams.
  • MU 498: Students will complete program notes based upon the literature performed on the Senior Recital demonstrating a comprehensive knowledge of the vocabulary and terminology of music.
  • MU 272: The knowledge of harmony, melody, and rhythm will be assessed through both composition and analysis.
  • MU 377: Students will demonstrate an understanding of significant characteristics of music through analytical techniques.
  • MU 498 : Students will perform a Senior Recital of memorized works from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and modern periods. Singers will perform in no fewer than three languages.
