HI 313 - American Cultural History (3)

The reflection hypothesis states that in order to understand a culture, one must first understand what that culture produces and what it consumes. Using a broad definition of culture, this course seeks to examine how Americans make sense of their place in the world and express those worldview/s. Specifically, this course is an examination of contemporary American Culture since 1945. Using the analytical tools of mass culture and folk culture as interpretive lenses, students will analyze primary sources relating to the following possible topics: comic books, heroes (cowboys, detectives, super heroes), video games, etc. In addition, students will engage historiographical issues dealing with American Culture using appropriate secondary literature. Meets the upper-division requirement for American history in the history major. Every other year.
